“Yeah, I have.”

Character Development Challenge - Question Six

Describe your character’s happiest memory.

[OOC] Happiest memory… I don’t think it’s one instant, it’s a series of interconnected things.

“One time, when-when I was eight, we were hiking along the stream, and I saw something… shining, in the water. It was a genuine arrowhead. You would have thought I had found a lost civilization the way Grandpa carried on about it…”

“I have to hand it to you Milo… you really came through.”

“My grandpa used to tell me stories of this place as far back as I can remember. I only wish he could be standing here with me.”

“You can stay here in Atlantis, Milo.”

Character Development Challenge - Question Five

What’s your character’s ranking on the Kinsey Scale?

[OOC] This is a weird question to answer… from the research I have done, the use of this scale basically states that being a 0 (exclusively heterosexual) or 6 (exclusively homosexual) is not possible, though most people state their character at one of these extremes. That said, I’d rather avoid ranking on a scale and instead explain. Milo is straight, yes. (Yes, I know, so boring pffft. Just kiddiiiiiing.) But I simply cannot see him with another man (exceptThomasbutthat’sspeciallolol); it just doesn’t match him. Not to mention Milo lives in the 1900’s, and homosexuality wasn’t exactly an open-air subject back then. In fact, Milo didn’t even know it was a possible thing until an incident in the pub some months back, when his friend Shego at the time explained it to him. He doesn’t fully understand it (simply from no exposure to it) and so he isn’t quite sure how to react to it, but he does get the basic concept and has nothing against it. “You love whoever you love, I guess,” was his response.

OOC: Not sure how the quality of this will be since I couldn’t scan it and just had to use a webcam picture, but ta-da! Floorplan of Milo’s rented apartment in NYC while he’s on the surface. It’s kind of a rough draft since I’m not so much of an artist. If you can’t read the notes on the side, it says not to scale and objects closer/smaller than they appear.
The living room is right as you walk in, there’s a balcony with a large window right ahead, the hall to the side leads to the study (below), bathroom (left), and bedroom (above). The kitchen is to the right of the home, there’s an island and a small table.
So those who are ever in his home, now you know what it looks like!

Name: Milo James Thatch

Face Character: Matthew Gray Gubler

Age: 32 (as of 1914)

Time Period: Gilded Age/Progressive Era of America. Born in 1882 (Fishkill, New York); lived during the sinking of the Titanic and left for Atlantis a few months before beginning of World War I.

Current year placement (generally): 1917

Titles: Professor, King of Atlantis, Holds a double doctorate but does not go by “Dr.”

Family: Augustus Avery and Lucille Rose Thatch, killed in a railway accident 1885; Thaddeus Thatch, paternal grandfather, primary guardian, deceased 1912.

Education: Graduated Beauford Beaumont Highschool at age 11 (1893); entered Oxford University at 14 (1896-1903), declining acceptance to Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. Milo holds a Double Doctorate in the fields of Linguistic Theory (Grammatical Structure, Syntax, Babel Theory, Evolution, Written Languages and Lost Alphabets) and Dead Languages (Cryptology and Hieroglyphics) and his thesis work was done on American Indian tribes of the California Coast, Hawaiian, Pacific Island, and South Asian/Sub-continent Strains. He has minor degrees in Chemistry, Literature (French, Old English, Chinese), Art History, Sociology, and Anthropology. In addition to his formal training as a linguist and translator, Milo was tutored by the legendary Thaddeus Thatch in the fields of Cartography, Drafting, Navigation, Astronomy, Archeology, and Antique Restoration techniques.

Employment: Washington D.C. as a museum Linguist/Translator and Cartographic Restoration Expert, 1903-1914. Participated in the Academic Exchange Program 1909-10, spent 11 months working in Paris at Bibliotech National, and the Prado Museum in Madrid. Tutored students from Georgetown in Art History and Literature. Now in Atlantis; King, record/archive keeper, teacher, adviser, etc

Past: Milo didn’t have almost any friends as a child. He spent most of his time with his grandfather, studying, exploring, etc. He was entirely oblivious to the scorn of his classmates, and it was only as he got older it very slowly started to occur to him that people seemed to ignore him. Still, he just ignored them as well. He has such a pure heart that he wasn’t “easy” to bully because he wouldn’t understand what was going on. As an adult, he had to fight against rumours that he only held his museum position because of his grandfather, even though he was obviously over-qualified.

Romance: Milo is, put simply, an excellent lover. He is adoring, sweet, and caring. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get the chance to show it much. When Milo crushes on someone, he becomes easily flustered if he thinks he’s not showing it the right way. His first girlfriend was named Lisa McGrath; he was 23. In the time period he lived in, marriage was very stressed, particularly to a man who can provide well. Milo was very into his work and never has had a lot of money, and as for Lisa, marriage simply wasn’t what she wanted at the time. Milo didn’t have a very serious relationship after that.

Strong Points: The most obvious strength Milo has is his intellect. He not only is naturally smart, but he’s worked for it - and he enjoys it! He loves to learn and study and he rarely stops, always carrying a book with him. He is also an extremely good-natured person. People tease him but he’s the kind of guy who will just laugh it off or joke back at you. He’ll talk to anyone as long as they appear interested. He tends to ramble if you get him stuck in something he loves - don’t ask unless you want the full answer! He’s humble and very modest, but he also has fine self-esteem. Milo is a very private, reserved person; you have to really dig at him to get to his core. He won’t just reveal things. Some people take it as he doesn’t want to, but if you keep going and ask the right questions, and if he trusts you, he’ll talk to you eventually. Milo is fiercely loyal and will fight at any cost to protect his home and his friends. He is incredibly versatile in that even if he is confused, he won’t let situations faze him and just keeps pressing on. He’s very open-minded and doesn’t discount anything to myth or legend after all the things he’s seen proven. A common misconception about people like Milo is that he is very shy; as stated before, he is reserved, but Milo certainly isn’t shy! He is very outgoing and friendly once you start talking to him. He certainly has the capability to get very loud and excited. Usually he is a very meek individual, but he will confront someone if the situation calls for it. Milo has a great power of will, and that alone has pulled him through things.

Weak Points: It’s no secret that Milo is very awkward. He doesn’t approach people, only waits to be invited, but once he is he is wonderful company. It’s just getting him to the people that’s the hardest thing! The problem is, when he finally makes a friend, someone who sees past the awkwardness and gets to know him, he is deeply affected when he loses them. The only time Milo’s temper flares is at the mention of Rourke. That’s the only thing in the world he truly hates and he gets extremely agitated at the thought of him. And though he rolls with the punches, if you insult Milo by calling him weak, prepare to get told off. He doesn’t tolerate that anymore after all he went through. And if you hurt his friends… yeah, better fix it fast. He doesn’t hold a grudge, but he does hold onto feelings a long time; whatever they are, so be careful with his trust. Milo is fairly naive, but mostly it’s just that he is oblivious. He is very self-aware, but he isn’t exactly aware that anything about himself is comical. When people laugh at him, he gets a little sheepish, but he doesn’t drown in embarrassment and can just continue on. But with the naivety comes an inherent trust that people are good, which isn’t always true, of course. Milo is an extremely curious person which has gotten him in a few tight situations simply because he didn’t say no and back out, but instead just ran with it. It’s also obvious that Milo doesn’t have brute strength on his side, no matter how much willpower he has. He is actually fairly agile when need be, but he wouldn’t win in a fistfight. And sometimes Milo gets in the way of himself; his work has interfered with personal relationships before.

Secrets: He’s terrified of his partial-immortality and hasn’t told anyone about it except Helga, only recently. He is also deeply affected by Rourke’s death; the fact that he killed a man has messed with him sometimes.

Other Info: Originally, I stuck to Milo being married to Kida, and I planned on keeping it that way. I just love that story, and I am still writing and developing things for it. However, to grow as an RPer and for the sake of developing an interesting story, I decided to change it just here in general paras and Milo is going to end up with someone else. (More to be added)

OOC: Young Milo? Y/N?

I randomly came across this little guy and that’s what I thought of. At least a little bit, though his hair is rather long. But what do you guys think? c:

[ I just now noticed the nervous twists to Milo’s hands, which he doesn’t release until Helga tugs on his sleeves and slides her hands down his arms (not shown). This is an indicator of Milo’s being unaccustomed to touch, especially with the way she did it, flippantly entering his space and tugging and adjusting faster than his eye could follow. A common stereotype of “nerds” is the way they freeze while in the presence of attractive women, but what I have always loved about Milo is that he doesn’t fit that generalization. At most he only gets a bit flustered, but more as a result of confusion than anything. He rarely comes far enough outside his head to take notice of things like that and let it get to him. ]

Character Development Challenge - Question Four

How vain is your character? Do they find themselves attractive?

(OOC) This. This is a wonderful question. And it’s a very important question. Because it says a lot about Milo’s personality. I’ve been meaning to do some writing on this anyway, so I’ll take the time to say it here.

The answer is not no, like most people would assume. BUT- it isn’t yes. The fact is, Milo doesn’t notice things like that. He isn’t really self-aware at all. He has gone through enough to now be able to recognize teasing and insults, unlike his oblivity in the past. But he retained this sense of not being self-conscious unless thrust into certain situations.

Most importantly, Milo does not have low self-esteem. Does he get discouraged, yes. Does he feel amazed when something great happens to him, yes. And like any normal, complex human being, he has moments where he feels unworthy, but more than that is a feeling of being incredibly awed and grateful.

So as far as attractiveness, Milo will not go around saying he doesn’t feel attractive. Heck, the guy hardly knows what that means because he is so in his head that he hardly notices things like that. He can be struck by a pretty girl (as we all know XD) but it’s usually not so much a stranger’s beauty, but perhaps the recognition of a girl he likes. He just doesn’t fit into the “nerd” stereotype of losing his head entirely around them.

On the other hand, that also means he wouldn’t ever say he IS attractive. As far as being vain in general, well, he is humble, but does take pride in what he can do. He’ll act “cool”, like with Audrey and other times when he gets to “show off” his abilities. As per being vain about looks, not at all. He is who he is and he’s the kind of person who would never complain nor flaunt his looks. He relies on who he is rather than what he looks like.

Character Development Challenge - Question Three

Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from. If they don’t have any, is there a reason?

(OOC) Milo doesn’t really have any major scars. Maybe a nick here and there from childhood clumsiness like we all do, but as a scholar he was never one to do anything “dangerous”. He accompanied his grandfather on digs and hikes and such, and tried out for a couple sport teams in college, but otherwise didn’t spend a lot of time outside to recieve any real injuries. The wounds sustained in the events of rescuing Atlantis all healed without blemish under the crystal’s power.

However, many months ago Milo was in a horrid battle with a large group of outlander lions who attacked the DFD pub and left Peter, Lottie, and Nala bleeding. He arrived just after they had fled. After healing the first two he pursued Nala, armed only with a small handgun, and they were jumped by 10 of the lions. Milo and Nala both nearly had their throats ripped out. Another group of lions chased them away and he had to take Nala to Atlantis, needing the aid of it’s healers, saving both of their lives and bonding them as close friends. His neck, already susceptible to aches, pains him with a little more frequency and there are faint, sensitive scar lines, if you look very closely, as well as the lions’ claws leaving a few marks on his back.

Continuation of Question Two, regarding Milo’s physical features:

Here are a few shots featuring his Atlantean tattoo. You can see the animation change between the first and second Atlantis movies; in the first the star is clearly doubled, but it’s flatter and simpler in the second.

Also listed in the answer was his glasses and smaller physique, which are obvious here as well.

Character Development Challenge - Question Two

What are your character’s most prominent physical features?

[OOC] The first thing most people notice about Milo would be his large round glasses. The second is the fact that he is small; he is extremely skinny, something that he used to still gets teased for. As for height, he’s fairly average, but still tends to be one of the smallest in a group. (He’s about 5’8”-5’9”.) The most distinguishing mark he has now would be his his Atlantean tattoo, which is a large star covering his right shoulder.

Character Development Challenge - Question One

Describe your character’s relationship with their mother or their father, or both. Was it good? Bad? Were they spoiled rotten, ignored? Do they still get along now, or no?

My parents? Well… I never knew my parents. My parents died in a railway accident when I was 3… 1885. The only thing I really know about them is that their names were Lucille Rose and Augustus Avery Thatch, and they were British… as for knowing them, I only know some vague things from some of the stories my grandfather told me. He became the father figure in my life when he took me in, and we were very close.

[ OOC: Number 16 is the question about “other” family members, so we’ll hold off on talking in depth about his grandfather until then. ]

Character Development Challenge

Been putting it off for awhile, but yes, I’m finally going to start it! I decided they would be answered in a mix of IC and OOC so that I’m not always just spitting out facts. When he answers IC, I’m treating it as though he is being interviewed, basically.

I’ll try to queue up some of the responses ahead of time and get them to post probably around late afternoon, hopefully everyday. However, during this I also thought I would intersperse other facts about Milo that are not covered in the questions (because I know a lot and I need a good excuse to share. XD) This will spread it past the 30 days, which I think is a good thing. Huzzah!
